Every so often, the statement returns: ‘Print is dead.’ What a conversation-stopper, I always think. Online media and apps are convenient and offer advantages over their paper equivalents, such as immediacy and interactivity. But I have to admit that I still often enjoy holding a magazine, opening a physical newspaper to read an in-depth article, or breathing in the smell of a freshly printed weekly.
In recent weeks, however, it has been impossible to ignore how difficult survival is becoming for print. In quick succession, Gijrath Media Groep (GMG), Pelican Magazines and, after 33 years, Gay Krant all went bankrupt. Shocking!
The challenge for print publishers is to develop creative, cross-media concepts that breathe new life into print. Think of the glossy titles from these publishers: Jackie, JFK, Carros, Winelife, Residence, Elegance and Big Black Book. Let us hope they can find a way to relaunch rather than quietly disappear. At the very least, let them go down fighting.
