As a technology-focused PR agency, we had already embraced the idea that serving clients did not always require everyone to be in the office. With the right connection and arrangements, work could also take place at home—or somewhere a little further away.
In May 2018, that somewhere was a villa in the Algarve. From 14 to 18 May, our Dutch and Belgian colleagues exchanged their usual offices for a working week in Portugal.
Bring the Benelux team together
The trip had two purposes. It was an opportunity to strengthen the relationships between colleagues in our Benelux team, and a way to celebrate a successful 2017 that had included several awards.
Working in one location gave people who normally collaborated across offices more time together. It also created space for conversations beyond the usual project meetings.
Look at the work with fresh eyes
The week was still a working week. Our approach—think big, get things done and have fun—travelled with us.
A different environment offered a chance to look at familiar assignments from a new perspective and develop ideas for serving clients even better. The aim was to combine the practical work with the inspiration of a change of scene.
Keep the practical arrangements clear
Clients, journalists and other contacts could continue reaching the team through the usual channels. Colleagues in Amsterdam and Belgium were available to receive deliveries, while online communication kept the travelling team connected.
That preparation was part of making the trip workable. A new location should not leave other people uncertain about how to contact you or what support is available.
