Reflections on 2014

Late December always makes me a little nostalgic. Alongside the dark days, traffic and gloomy weather come beautifully lit streets, Christmas trees and a welcoming atmosphere. It is a time to look back and look ahead.
Quote: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together

It is the season for looking back and looking ahead. That applies to us here at Progress in Amsterdam, too.

2014 has been a special year for me. It was the year I returned from maternity leave in May, the Progress team grew and our director Stella celebrated her tenth anniversary. Once again, we worked hard and had a great time achieving results with our clients and colleagues at Eventive and Contentbureau, among others. And we did rather well.

We have also just completed an extensive refurbishment of our office. After a successful opening reception in mid-December, followed by a celebration of LVT Group’s twentieth anniversary, we are comfortably settled and ready for the future. An extra floor gives us plenty of room for growth, meetings, brainstorming, media training and Friday afternoon drinks. How good is that?

2014 was also the year we became Microsoft Netherlands’ PR agency in September, something we are enormously proud of as a team. It was the year I passed seven years at Progress Communications as a PR consultant for IT clients, some of whom I have worked with for just as long. That feels special.

It was also the year of the Winter Olympics in Russia, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the World Cup, the mystery surrounding Flight 370 and the MH17 disaster. The year South Korean rapper and singer PSY’s Gangnam Style video reached two billion YouTube views and paper train tickets were abolished in the Netherlands. And a year that will go down as one of the warmest on record.

I do not live near Amsterdam, but even a commute that can become quite lengthy in traffic has not tempted me to look for a job closer to home. I love what I do, and the people I work with make it even more enjoyable. December is a time for sentiment, reflection and resolutions. It has been a demanding year in several ways, but we are ending it well and I am already looking forward to 2015. Still wondering whether you could use our help? Take another look at my colleague Sara’s blog. We are ready. My motto for 2015? “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” — an African proverb.

Wishing everyone a wonderful festive season!

Inger
